Pour Plotin, l’\u00e2me est immortelle et incorporelle, capable de subsister ind\u00e9pendamment du corps, mais choisissant de s’unir \u00e0 lui pour gouverner et organiser la mati\u00e8re. Donc, il faut aussi rechercher si la pens\u00e9e et l’opinion sont des affections ou si certaines le sont de cette mani\u00e8re et d’autres autrement. Il faut aussi examiner les pens\u00e9es, comment et de quoi elles proviennent, et en particulier cette activit\u00e9 de r\u00e9flexion et de recherche et de jugement sur ces choses, ce qu’elle pourrait bien \u00eatre.<\/p>

Et avant tout, il faut d\u00e9terminer \u00e0 quoi appartient la sensation. II. D’abord, il faut saisir l’\u00e2me, pour savoir si l’\u00e2me et le fait d’\u00eatre une \u00e2me sont deux choses distinctes.<\/p>

En effet, si c’est le cas, alors l’\u00e2me est quelque chose de compos\u00e9, et il n’est pas absurde de consid\u00e9rer qu’elle puisse ressentir des passions de ce genre, et qu’elle puisse avoir des \u00e9tats et des dispositions meilleurs ou pires, si le raisonnement le permet ainsi.<\/p>

Ou bien, si l’\u00e2me et le fait d’\u00eatre une \u00e2me sont la m\u00eame chose, l’\u00e2me serait une sorte de forme qui ne subirait aucune de ces actions, mais qui produirait les actions chez un autre, tout en ayant en elle-m\u00eame l’activit\u00e9 qui lui est propre, quelle qu’elle soit selon le raisonnement. De cette mani\u00e8re, on pourrait aussi dire qu’elle est vraiment immortelle, puisque l’immortel et l’incorruptible doivent \u00eatre insensibles, en accordant une partie de soi \u00e0 un autre sans rien recevoir de ce dernier, ou aussi peu que ce que l’on tient des pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs, lesquels ne sont pas s\u00e9par\u00e9s de meilleurs. En effet, comment une telle chose, \u00e9tant insensible \u00e0 tout ce qui est ext\u00e9rieur, pourrait-elle avoir peur ? Que ce soit alors celui qui peut \u00eatre affect\u00e9 qui ait peur. Par cons\u00e9quent, elle n’a pas non plus de courage ; car le courage est pour ceux chez qui les choses effrayantes ne sont pas pr\u00e9sentes. Et les d\u00e9sirs, qui sont satisfaits par le corps en \u00e9tant rempli et vid\u00e9, sont-ils autres que ce qui est rempli et vid\u00e9 ? Comment le m\u00e9lange serait-il possible ? Ou bien, l’essence est-elle immiscible ? Et comment pourrait-il y avoir introduction de certaines choses ? Car alors, ce qui existe tendrait \u00e0 n’\u00eatre plus ce qu’il est. Et la douleur, encore plus \u00e9loign\u00e9e. Comment pourrait-elle \u00eatre afflig\u00e9e ou pour quelle raison ? En effet, le simple dans l’essence est autosuffisant, demeurant dans son propre \u00eatre. Est-elle donc heureuse quand quelque chose s’ajoute \u00e0 elle, bien qu’aucun bien ne s’approche d’elle ? Car ce qu’elle est, elle l’est toujours. Et elle ne percevra rien non plus, ni par la pens\u00e9e, ni par l’opinion ; la perception \u00e9tant une r\u00e9ception de forme ou d’affection corporelle, tandis que la pens\u00e9e et l’opinion d\u00e9pendent de la perception. Mais en v\u00e9rit\u00e9, il faut que l’\u00e2me soit plac\u00e9e dans un corps, qu’elle y soit ant\u00e9rieure ou non, et c’est \u00e0 partir d’elle que \u00ab\u00a0l’univers entier a \u00e9t\u00e9 appel\u00e9 \u00eatre vivant.\u00a0\u00bb Ainsi, bien qu’elle se serve du corps comme d’un instrument, elle n’est pas contrainte d’accepter les passions qui passent par le corps, tout comme les artisans ne sont pas affect\u00e9s par les passions des outils. Mais peut-\u00eatre doit-elle n\u00e9cessairement percevoir, si elle doit se servir de l’instrument pour conna\u00eetre les passions ext\u00e9rieures par le biais de la perception ; car utiliser les yeux, c’est voir. Mais il y a aussi des dommages li\u00e9s \u00e0 la vision, provoquant douleurs, souffrances, et, en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, tout ce qui arrive au corps, entra\u00eenant aussi des d\u00e9sirs cherchant \u00e0 gu\u00e9rir l’instrument. Mais comment les passions parviennent-elles \u00e0 l’\u00e2me depuis le corps ? En effet, un corps peut transmettre ses propres passions \u00e0 un autre corps, mais comment un corps pourrait-il les transmettre \u00e0 l’\u00e2me ? Car cela reviendrait \u00e0 dire qu’une chose en souffrance en fait souffrir une autre. Tant que l’un est celui qui utilise, et l’autre ce qui est utilis\u00e9, chacun reste distinct : c’est pourquoi celui qui utilise, c’est-\u00e0-dire l’\u00e2me, se s\u00e9pare (du corps). Mais avant que la philosophie ne les s\u00e9pare, comment \u00e9taient-ils li\u00e9s ? Ou bien \u00e9taient-ils m\u00e9lang\u00e9s ? Si c’\u00e9tait un m\u00e9lange, \u00e9tait-ce une certaine combinaison, comme une \u00ab\u00a0interconnexion\u00a0\u00bb, ou bien comme une forme non s\u00e9par\u00e9e, ou une forme adjacente, comme un pilote ? IV. Supposons donc qu’ils soient m\u00e9lang\u00e9s. Mais si un m\u00e9lange a eu lieu, l’\u00e9l\u00e9ment inf\u00e9rieur, le corps, deviendra sup\u00e9rieur, et l’\u00e9l\u00e9ment sup\u00e9rieur, l’\u00e2me, deviendra inf\u00e9rieur. Le corps deviendra meilleur en recevant la vie, tandis que l’\u00e2me deviendra pire en recevant la mort et l’irrationalit\u00e9. Comment ce qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 enlev\u00e9 de la vie pourrait-il recevoir en retour la perception ? Au contraire, si le corps re\u00e7oit la vie, c’est lui qui percevra et qui ressentira les passions qui proviennent de la perception. C’est donc lui qui d\u00e9sirera \u2014 car c’est lui qui jouira des objets de son d\u00e9sir \u2014 et qui craindra pour lui-m\u00eame ; c’est lui qui sera priv\u00e9 de plaisirs et qui p\u00e9rira.<\/p>

Il faut aussi examiner la mani\u00e8re du m\u00e9lange, car il pourrait bien ne pas \u00eatre possible, tout comme il serait impossible de dire qu’une ligne blanche est m\u00e9lang\u00e9e avec une autre nature. En effet, le terme \u00ab\u00a0interconnect\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb ne rend pas les \u00e9l\u00e9ments interconnect\u00e9s similaires dans leurs affections, mais il est possible qu’un \u00e9l\u00e9ment interconnect\u00e9 ne subisse pas les affections de l’autre, comme l’\u00e2me qui traverse sans souffrir les passions de l’autre, tout comme la lumi\u00e8re, et surtout si cette interconnexion est totale. Ce n’est donc pas \u00e0 cause de cette interconnexion qu’elle subira les passions du corps. Mais l’\u00e2me existera-t-elle dans le corps comme une forme dans la mati\u00e8re ? D’abord, si elle est une forme distincte, alors elle restera s\u00e9par\u00e9e, puisqu’elle est une substance, et cela serait encore plus vrai pour ce qui utilise (le corps). V. Mais il faut dire que l’\u00eatre vivant, ou le corps, est tel, soit en tant que \u00ab le commun \u00bb, soit en tant qu’une troisi\u00e8me chose n\u00e9e de ces deux. De toute mani\u00e8re, soit l’\u00e2me doit \u00eatre pr\u00e9serv\u00e9e impassible, bien qu’elle soit la cause de ce qui est de cet ordre, soit elle doit partager les souffrances. Et elle doit soit souffrir le m\u00eame genre de passion, soit une passion semblable, comme par exemple, l’\u00eatre vivant d\u00e9sirant d’une certaine mani\u00e8re, et la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante agissant ou souffrant d’une autre mani\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

Il faudra donc examiner plus tard comment le corps est tel ; mais comment l’\u00eatre vivant dans son ensemble pourrait-il ressentir de la douleur ? Serait-ce parce que, le corps \u00e9tant ainsi dispos\u00e9 et la souffrance parvenant \u00e0 la perception, celle-ci aboutit finalement \u00e0 l’\u00e2me ? Cependant, il n’est pas encore clair comment fonctionne la perception. Et lorsque la douleur commence \u00e0 partir d’une opinion et d’un jugement que quelque mal est pr\u00e9sent, soit pour soi-m\u00eame, soit pour l’un des siens, alors une transformation douloureuse se produit dans le corps et, en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, dans tout l’\u00eatre vivant. Mais il n’est pas encore clair non plus \u00e0 qui appartient cette opinion, \u00e0 l’\u00e2me ou \u00e0 l’ensemble des deux (\u00e2me et corps) ; de plus, l’opinion portant sur le mal ne porte pas en elle-m\u00eame la passion de la douleur. Car il est possible que l’opinion soit pr\u00e9sente sans que la douleur s’ensuive n\u00e9cessairement, tout comme la col\u00e8re ne suit pas n\u00e9cessairement l’opinion d’un m\u00e9pris, ni le d\u00e9sir l’opinion d’un bien.<\/p>\n

Comment alors ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes peuvent-ils \u00eatre communs ? Peut-\u00eatre parce que le d\u00e9sir appartient \u00e0 la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante, la col\u00e8re \u00e0 la facult\u00e9 irascible, et en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, l’aspiration \u00e0 la facult\u00e9 de l’app\u00e9tit. Mais dans ce cas, ils ne seraient plus communs, mais propres \u00e0 l’\u00e2me seule ; ou peut-\u00eatre \u00e9galement au corps, en ce sens qu’il faut que le sang et la bile s’\u00e9chauffent et que le corps soit d’une certaine mani\u00e8re dispos\u00e9 pour susciter le d\u00e9sir, comme dans le cas des plaisirs sensuels. Mais le d\u00e9sir du bien est une passion qui n’est pas commune, mais qui appartient \u00e0 l’\u00e2me, tout comme d’autres passions, et tout raisonnement ne reconna\u00eet pas que tout provient de l’ensemble commun.<\/p>\n

Mais lorsqu’un homme d\u00e9sire des plaisirs sensuels, c’est bien l’homme qui d\u00e9sire, tout comme la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante d\u00e9sire d’une certaine mani\u00e8re. Et comment ? Est-ce que l’homme initie le d\u00e9sir et la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante suit-elle ensuite ? Mais comment l’homme aurait-il pu d\u00e9sirer sans que la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante soit d\u00e9j\u00e0 mise en mouvement ? Ou bien est-ce que la facult\u00e9 d\u00e9sirante initie le d\u00e9sir ? VIII. Et l’intellect, qu’en est-il de lui ? Par ‘intellect’, je ne veux pas dire l’habitude que l’\u00e2me a des choses venant de l’intellect, mais bien l’intellect lui-m\u00eame. Ou bien poss\u00e9dons-nous \u00e9galement celui-ci au-dessus de nous ? Nous le poss\u00e9dons, qu’il soit commun ou propre, ou bien \u00e0 la fois commun \u00e0 tous et propre : commun, parce qu’il est indivisible, unique et partout le m\u00eame ; propre, parce que chacun le poss\u00e8de tout entier dans son \u00e2me premi\u00e8re. Ainsi, nous poss\u00e9dons les formes de deux mani\u00e8res : dans l’\u00e2me, comme enroul\u00e9es sur elles-m\u00eames et comme s\u00e9par\u00e9es, et dans l’intellect, toutes ensemble.<\/p>

Et Dieu, qu’en est-il ? Ou bien est-il au-dessus de la nature intelligible et de l’essence v\u00e9ritable, tandis que nous serions troisi\u00e8mes \u00e0 partir de \u00ab\u00a0l’indivisible\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il, de ce qui est au-dessus, et de \u00ab\u00a0ce qui est divis\u00e9 autour des corps\u00a0\u00bb, qu’il faut concevoir comme \u00e9tant ainsi divis\u00e9 autour des corps, en ce sens qu’il se distribue lui-m\u00eame aux grandeurs corporelles, \u00e0 chaque \u00eatre vivant, en fonction de ce qu’il est, puisqu’il est un tout, un seul pour l’ensemble ; ou bien, parce qu’il semble \u00eatre pr\u00e9sent aux corps en brillant sur eux et en les rendant vivants, non \u00e0 partir de lui-m\u00eame et du corps, mais tout en demeurant lui-m\u00eame, en leur donnant ses images, comme un visage dans de nombreux miroirs. IX. Ainsi donc, la nature de cette \u00e2me sera exempte de la cause des maux, de tout ce que l’homme fait et subit ; car ces choses concernent l’\u00eatre vivant commun, et elles sont communes, comme cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 dit. Mais si l’opinion de l’\u00e2me et la pens\u00e9e sont impliqu\u00e9es, comment peuvent-elles \u00eatre sans faute ? Car l’opinion erron\u00e9e est source de nombreuses mauvaises actions. Soit les maux sont commis lorsque nous sommes domin\u00e9s par ce qui est inf\u00e9rieur \u2013 et nous sommes souvent domin\u00e9s par le d\u00e9sir, la col\u00e8re ou une mauvaise illusion ; soit la pens\u00e9e erron\u00e9e, appel\u00e9e ainsi, n’est qu’une imagination, n’attendant pas le jugement du raisonnable, mais nous avons agi en \u00e9tant persuad\u00e9s par les choses inf\u00e9rieures, comme il arrive dans la perception lorsque l’on voit faussement avant que le jugement rationnel n’intervienne. Mais l’intellect s’est-il saisi de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 ou non, de sorte qu’il soit sans faute ? Ou bien faut-il dire que nous nous sommes saisis ou non de ce qui est intelligible dans l’intellect, ou de ce qui est en nous-m\u00eames ; car il est possible de l’avoir en nous et de ne pas l’avoir \u00e0 disposition.<\/span><\/p>

Nous avons donc distingu\u00e9 les choses communes et celles qui sont propres \u00e0 l’\u00e2me en disant que les choses corporelles ne peuvent exister sans le corps, tandis que celles qui n’ont pas besoin du corps pour \u00eatre en activit\u00e9 sont propres \u00e0 l’\u00e2me, et que la pens\u00e9e, en formulant un jugement sur les impressions provenant de la perception, contemple d\u00e9j\u00e0 les formes de mani\u00e8re r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie, c’est-\u00e0-dire la v\u00e9ritable pens\u00e9e de l’\u00e2me v\u00e9ritable ; car la v\u00e9ritable pens\u00e9e est l’activit\u00e9 des notions intellectuelles, et souvent la similitude et la communaut\u00e9 entre les choses ext\u00e9rieures et les choses int\u00e9rieures. XII. Mais si l’\u00e2me est sans faute, comment expliquer les jugements ? En effet, ce raisonnement est en d\u00e9saccord avec toute autre argumentation qui affirme que l’\u00e2me peut \u00e0 la fois p\u00e9cher et r\u00e9ussir, rendre des comptes, aussi bien dans l’Had\u00e8s que par la r\u00e9incarnation. Il faut donc ajouter \u00e0 cela un raisonnement suppl\u00e9mentaire ; et peut-\u00eatre trouvera-t-on un moyen de les concilier. Car le raisonnement qui accorde \u00e0 l’\u00e2me l’innocence absolue est simple et postule que l’\u00e2me et le fait d’\u00eatre une \u00e2me sont une seule et m\u00eame chose. Tandis que celui qui attribue \u00e0 l’\u00e2me la possibilit\u00e9 de p\u00e9cher la rend complexe en y ajoutant un autre type d’\u00e2me, portant en elle des passions violentes. Ainsi, l’\u00e2me devient compos\u00e9e de tout cela, et c’est en tant que tout qu’elle est affect\u00e9e, qu’elle p\u00e8che ; c’est ce compos\u00e9 qui doit rendre des comptes, et non l’autre. On dit donc que la descente et l’inclinaison se produisent par l’union avec ce qui est illumin\u00e9 par elle.
